Preferred site for Regional Freight Hub announced
The Regional Freight Hub is identified as one of our region’s key transport initiatives to assist with Manawatū-Whanganui’s medium-term recovery from COVID-19. In 2018, Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones announced a $40 million PGF investment to be used by KiwiRail to complete site master planning, concept designs and to secure land.
The next step in the project was announced in early July, with Minister Jones outlining the preferred site for the Regional Freight Hub – which will be between Palmerston North Airport and Bunnythorpe, partially in the North East Industrial Zone.
KiwiRail General Manager Investment and Capital Transactions, Olivia Poulsen says that after spending the last year assessing potential sites, the preferred site has a range of advantages.
“The selected site is close to future potential customers and the Palmerston North Airport and has no major impact on existing main infrastructure. It is also aligned with NZTA/Palmerston North City Council (PNCC) road projects, including the future freight ring road and complements PNCC development strategy.”
KiwiRail is now working to engage with directly affected landowners, while also seeing wider stakeholder and public feedback on the project. More information, including an online survey can be found at https://www.kiwirail.co.nz/what-we-do/projects/regional-freight-hub/
